At St Charles’ we use the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc Phonics scheme in Key Stage One. We teach children to read through an interactive and fun style of learning pure sounds, green words that are decodable and red words that cannot be decoded. Our children are taught in small groups, at their appropriate level, to aid their progression. All Key Stage 1 teachers and Teaching Assistants are taught in small groups. Read Write Inc Phonics is a systematic and dynamic literacy programme rooted in quality teaching.

Key Stage 2 Literacy
We follow the success of completing the phonics programme by introducing Read Write Inc Literacy & Language in Key Stage 2, integrated with other literacy units based on our current creative cross-curricular topic. The Literacy & Language Read Write Inc scheme teaches children to develop their skills of inference and deduction and understand how a text is created. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding in English. They have the opportunity to experience a wide range of texts both in the classroom and the school library and use a range of resources such as dictionaries and thesauruses to support their work. Children use ICT in Literacy lessons where it enhances their learning, as in drafting their work and using multimedia to study how words and images are combined to convey meaning. Wherever possible we encourage children to use and apply their learning in other areas of the curriculum.
Children are taught spelling patterns and rules during Read, Write Inc sessions in Key Stage 1, and by following the Read Write Inc materials aimed at Key Stage 2. This enables children to explore and practise spellings whilst also applying them to different contexts through a variety of activities. We also focus on High Frequency words and common words as established in the 2014 curriculum. These words are sent home to practise and children are tested weekly. Please find copies of these spellings below:
